Teaching Dog Agility Weaves With A Weave Chute

Teaching Dog Agility Weaves With A Weave Chute
 by: Brad Carlson
There are many methods to teach dogs how to weave. Having attended a variety of agility camps and agility seminars, I've seen quite a few of the top handlers present their preferred method of weave training. Their training techniques vary, but the one thing they do have in common, the end result, their dogs all weave fast and efficiently.
The Weave Chute is one method of training weaves. The Weave Chute is a structure where the weave poles pull apart and the dog runs down the middle channel. The weave poles are setup on a base either PVC or metal, the even number poles pull back to the same side and the odd numbered poles pull apart to the same side. The poles are brought closer together, training a chain of sessions, until the weave poles are in a straight line.
To start, the weave poles are about 3 feet apart. Set your dog on a Stay (Sit, Down, or Stand). Leave your dog and go to the other end of the chute or channel. Call your dog, allow them to run as fast as they can through the chute, when they get near you through a toy straight ahead or between your legs. You want them to keep moving past you and not slow up as they get near you.
Move the weaves closer together, try 2 feet for a few sessions, then 1 foot apart for a few sessions. When the weaves are about 1 foot apart your dog will begin to actually begin the weaving behavior, depending on the size of your dog of course. This is the stage to add guide wires. The guide wires help the dog stay on path through the weaves. Your dogs speed will most likely slow a little in this stage. This is all right, he is thinking more and feeling the weaves against him for the first time.
You are still using your Stay at one end of the weaves, leaving your dog and going to the other end of the weaves and calling him through. Make sure your dog is successfully coming to you through the weave path, not jumping over the guide wires and running to you. If this happens replace him. If it happens again, go back and open the weave chute a little more. Practice until he can come to you down the weave chute with 70% to 80% accuracy, not many of us are 100% right in everything we try. Begin moving the weave poles closer together in inches now. Most dogs do well even if the weaves are off set by one inch , but somehow when they are setup in a line, they must look different and training sessions may seem stalled for awhile. Be patient, practice with your weaves offset by one inch then in a straight line, if you encounter problems, go back to the one inch offset. Your dog will soon realize he can weave when the poles are in a straight line.
The next transition is taking off the guide wires. With 12 poles, you use 10 guide wires. The first guide wires I remove are from the middle. The last ones to be removed are the entry and exit guide wires. Weaving is mentally challenging to you and your dog, so be patient with your dog and yourself. Be prepared to put in a few long months of training to get those fast and efficient weaves.

Does Your Dog Miss You Too Much?

Does Your Dog Miss You Too Much?
 by: Blake Kritzberg
Your dog seems to be driving you up the wall lately, exhibiting serious behavior problems -- and no amount of verbal correction seems to work. She chews the furniture, gnaws on shoes, turns over the trash cans, howls and barks when you're not around, or even seems really depressed when you come home.
There could be many reasons for behavior problems such as these, but chances are that your dog just misses you too much, and is showing she's bored and lonely. This is especially true if you only have one dog in the house and she's home alone while you work.
One solution to the problem is to try to keep your dog entertained while you are gone. Get a bone or a Kong chew toy, so she'll have a challenge for when you're not around. Another tactic is to turn on the radio so she'll hear human voices. Puppies respond especially well to this; it seems to reassure them much like an actual human presence. Also, if you can lend her a worn shirt, try leaving this in your dog's bed so that your smell remains even when you aren't there.
Discourage Destructive Behavior
In cases of destructive behavior problems, it pays to correct your dog immediately when you catch her chewing your furniture or taking out her frustrations on your belongings. Be vigilant at first -- instant feedback is much easier for your dog to understand than corrections a minute or two later. When you catch her, rush to your dog's side, grab her by the back of her neck and give her a firm "No!"
This should let her know she's done wrong, but if you catch your dog doing it again, some owners may want to roll up 10 to 20 sheets of newspaper and give her a mild whack on the thigh. This won't hurt her, but the sound will seem threatening and loud.
I used to come home to the remains of a stack of mail, ripped to shreds by my dog. I knew that she'd probably done it hours ago, so to reinforce the memory of the negative behavior, I grabbed some of the mail, put it near her mouth and uttered a firm "No!" She shredded the mail a few more times, but each time I reinforced with "No!" and she soon got the message, to our mutual happiness.
Help Your Pup Feel "Up"
Are you playing with and talking to your dog when you come home? Doing so can make a great difference to her feelings. Just like us, dogs want to be acknowledged and fussed over when we're around. Dogs being such social animals, it doesn't work if we merely feed and walk them and ignore them the rest of the time. If we can't spend some quality time with our pets, we might as well not have them at all.
If you can afford it and your dog is alone, give serious thought to getting another. This worked well for me -- after my second dog came into the picture, my first turned into an angel, and has stayed that way ever since -- which is to say, I have a happier dog!
If a second dog just isn't an option for you, you could also spend a little more time bonding with your dog by enrolling both of you in an obedience class. This way, you'll learn more control and teamwork involving your four-footed friend. You may even find your dog more relaxed and better behaved, as the training puts you in a dominant light and takes the pressure off her to lead the household "pack." Plus, your dog gets a chance to meet other dogs. You'll soon notice how eager she is for the next class!

Word docs

I have some Word documents that I want to open in an older version of Word (Word for 95). Not only will can I not open the documents, but it causes an error and closes Word.  Same thing happens with Wordpad.  They are practically unreadable in Notepad.

How do I open the documents?

Query re Messenger and Firefox
08:25pm 16/12/2006

I'm using windows Live Messenger, and also using Firefox as my browser. When I sign into Messenger, and I get a pop-up telling me how many emails I have, and click on it, it automatically opens using IE, rather than Firefox.

I've tried everything I can think of - can anyone help??

I am using Microsoft Word 2000. When I type a link, it automatically makes it a hypertext link. I know how to edit the hyperlink so it's just text, but how do I keep Word from making a hypertext link in the first place? It's not under Options.

Okay, for some weird reason, whenever I try to open/save a torrent file, it tries (and fails) to come up in Adobe Photoshop. This is probably due to either my cousin (or me, when I didn't know what I was doing) clicking the wrong thing on one of those 'open using...' windows. Does anyone maybe know how to undo this? I'm really wanting to download torrent files lately, and it's getting on my nerves that I can't do so. D:

Hello! I am new and I have a question. I plan to get my first tattoo tomorrow. Although I am very excited about this, I was wondering, is it customary to tip your tattoo artist? If so, how much? Thanks!

Is there a way to screen LJ comments so that only the person you replied to can read them (excluding when they can read it in the email)?

Attn: accountants or math wizes in general who know Excel

I'm doing homework using Mic. Office Excel. This involves a financial 7-Year projection sheet. I created that with no issues. Did a formulas version and values version, and a 3-D column chart. Now I have to do a Financial Projection Goal Seek Values version of the original values version and I'm stumped. (I'm in school for web design, not accounting and it's beyond me why I need this, but I do.) To give you a specific idea...
Screen shot of values version and the information to make the goal seek versionCollapse )

If anyone can help, I'd be soooooo grateful!

This is a simple question...or it should be. I've tried to understand the S2 lingo but...

I am using A Novel Conundrum. When I hit enter, to separate paragraphs and put some white space between them, it automatically deletes the space between the paragraphs and just tabs the first line of the next paragraph in instead. I have tried to edit customizations, but can't figure out which feature will change that so I get actual space between the paragraphs.

Please help, and thanks for your valuable time!!
Customization Issues

Hi :)

I've just changed my LJ to the S2 style "Opal (Libra OSWD)" (new layout can be viewed here), and while most of the customizations I wanted to make to it work fine, there's just a couple of things I couldn't figure out how to tweak.
(Apologies if this is answered elsewhere, but I've had a look through s2howto etc, and it is all very confusing and difficult to find the right info...)

Basically, I want to be able to:
- Make my layout show both journal Title and Subtitle
- Change the Date format to DD/MM/YY
- Rearrange the components in the sidebar so that the Calendar is at the top
- Swap the comment links around, so that the Read Comments link comes before the Post Comment link.

Thanks so much for your help!

I've been looking through tutorials, but I can't seem to find how to make my journal subtitle appear on my main page. I'm using S1 Generator style. You can see the journal here. The title is "Cigarettes and Coffee", and I'm trying to get the subtitle "these hands were once his hands" to appear beneath that. Thank you so much!

I realise it is a greatestjournal and not a livejournal, but the communities here are generally much better and the coding is all the same, so I don't see what difference it makes.
